AC Milan claim Club World Cup with 4-2 win over Boca Juniors

soccer fans at the yokohama international stadium were treated to a hugely entertaining club world cup final on sunday. as expected, european champions ac milan faced south american counterparts boca juniors for the title of best club side in the world. it took milan 21 minutes to strengthen their claim on that title, through filippo inzaghi. boca hit back immediately with rodrigo palacio's near-post header. the uefa champions league winners regained the lead early in the second half as defender alessandro nesta fired into the roof of boca's net. the game's real turning point came in a three-minute spell that saw hugo ibarra's shot cannon off dida's post. at the other end, european player of the year kaka struck to make it 3-1 to milan. inzaghi's second saw milan open a 4-1 lead, and effectively finish off boca hopes, before red cards from an over-excited referee for milan defender kakha kaladze and boca's pablo ledesma. there was time for a sixth goal, courtesy of massimo ambrosini's own goal, but milan ran out 4-2 winners to celebrate the first european success in the revamped club world cup competition. soundbite: (italian) milan coach carlo ancelotti says: "in the first half, boca were playing quite well. it was quite an open game and both teams had opportunities. they were very attacking, and i think they are good on the break. they do have a few players with lots of speed. however, in the second half, there were opportunities to counter-attack and we were able to capitalise on those chances." supercaption: carlo ancelotti, ac milan coach.
