Lesson 4 -- "Theology: Who is God?" Friday, April 25, 2008 By Pastor John Honold 1. Who is God? (Colossians 2:2-3) a. Theology: the study of the existence, nature, and attributes of God b. "Nothing that is true can contradict the nature of God" c. What is it that keeps me from understanding that God is who He says He is? 2. What is Eternal Life? a. Scriptural emphasis on eternal life (Luke 18:18; John 3:16; John 4:13-14; John 5:24; John 5:39-40; John 6:27; John 6:54) b. "This is eternal life" (John 17:1-3) c. The Apostle Paul's perspective (Philippians 3:8-10) d. God's perspective (Hosea 6:6; Jeremiah 9:23-24) e. The connection between knowing God and knowing myself 3. Meaning of Names a. The Names of God (1) The Living God - Jehovah, I Am (Exodus 3:13-15): the one who is self-existent, beyond time and space, yet ever available and present to us - El Olam, the Eternal (Psalm 90:2): a timeless, enduring, forever kind of Being who has always been and shall always be - Avi, Father (Isaiah 64:8): the Father-heart of God (2) The Unchanging God - Jehovah Ha Tsur, the Rock (Deuteronomy 32:15): immutable, changelessness, steadfastness, absolute and utter reliability - Jehovah Shammah: the Lord is There (Ezekiel 48:35): omnipresent (3) The Almighty God - El Shaddai, the Almighty (Genesis 17:1): omnipotence - El Elyon, God Most High (Genesis 14:18-20): His exalted place of dominion, including omniscience -- seeing and knowing all things - Jehovah Sabaoth, Lord of Hosts (Psalm 24:10): ruler of the angelic hosts - Adonai Jehovah (Genesis 15:1-2): owner and master -- the God of all my life, potential and destiny (4) The Saving God - Jehovah Tsidkenu (Jeremiah 23:6): the ultimate equitable, just, mighty yet merciful, holy yet patient, powerful yet humble judge, He is our Righteousness - Jehovah Rapha (Exodus 15:26): the Lord who heals - Jehovah Nissi (Exodus 17:15): the Lord is my banner -- He goes before me in spiritual warfare b. El Qanna: "Jealous God" (Deuteronomy 4:23-24; Zechariah 8:2; Exodus 34:14) c. "When we know Him, we know ourselves" 4. The Attack a. The Battle (2 Corinthians 10:4-5) b. On God -- His nature and character c. On His Word (Ezekiel 22:26-28) 5. God's Word can be trusted (1 Peter 1:24-25; Hebrews 4:12)
